Titans Third in Quad Meet in Berkeley

March 16, 2008

BERKELEY, CA - Cal State Fullerton freshmen Alaina Baker and Shelly Cooper finished second and third, respectively, in the all-around while freshman Maddie Steinauer took home individual honors on vault to help the Titans to a third place finish in a quad meet host by California on Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif.

San Jose State (194.825) won the meet followed by the host Golden Bears (194.100), the Titans (193.950), and UC Davis (191.325). Sunday marked the fourth time in the last six meets that Fullerton (6-12 overall) has topped the 193-point barrier.

Baker scored a 38.950 to finish second in the all-around, marking the ninth time in 10 meets this season that the freshman has scored 38 points or better. Cooper was a close third in the all-around behind her teammate, scoring a career-high 38.825 in only her second all-around performance this season.

Steinauer tied for first place on vault with a 9.825, sharing individual honors with the Spartans' Veronica Porte. It was the eighth time in nine meets this season that she has scored better than 9.80 on the apparatus.

The event was Fullerton's best on the day as the Titans placed five vaulters in the top 10 and all six in the top 11 en route to a season high-tying 48.900.

Fullerton also got top 10 finishes from sophomore Britni Echeverria on bars, who finished fourth with a career high-tying 9.825, and junior Jessica Tait on beam, who finished seventh in the event with a 9.725.

Sophomore Katie Turcotte tied for eighth on floor with her teammate, Baker, each scoring 9.775. Cooper was 10th on the apparatus with a 9.750.

Cal State Fullerton returns to the floor for the final time this regular season as the Titans head to Tucson, Ariz., for a quad meet hosted by the University of Arizona and also features Brigham Young and UC Davis.
