Atkinson, Murphy Alive in NCAA Wrestling

Two-time Pac-10 141-pound champion Morgan Atkinson and 184-pounder Ian Murphy remain alive for Cal State Fullerton in the consolation round after the first day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday. Atkinson decisioned Nick Pickerell of Northern Iowa, 8-5, and lost to Josh Churella of Michigan, 5-1. He next faces Pac-10 foe Adam Hall of Boise State. At 184, Murphy lost to No. 2-seeded Mike Pucillo of Ohio State, 11-2, but then pinned Jesse Strawn of Old Dominon in 27 seconds. He next faces No. 12-seeded Jack Jensen of Oklahoma State. At 133, T. J. Dillashaw lost to Tyler McCormick of Missouri, 5-2, and to David Marble of Bucknell, 11-7, in the wrestleback. At 197, John Drake lost to No. 4-seeded Wynn Michalka of Central Michigan, 12-2, and Matt Koz of Tennessee-Chattanooga, 5-1.
Iowa holds a narrow lead in the team standings. Fullerton is tied for 33rd place. |
