Titans Take Game One of Twin Bill, 6-3

April 15, 2007

Box Score

Davis, Calif. - Evan McArthur was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs as No. 18 Cal State Fullerton (22-12) earned its eighth series victory with a 6-3 win over UC Davis in the first game of a non-conference double header Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Baseball Complex.

Fullerton's Jeff Kaplan (6-3) utilized a rainy Saturday off to re-energize and be able to battle through gusty winds and cool temperatures on Sunday morning. The junior tossed 6 2/3 innings of nine-hit ball and earned his team-leading sixth win of the year. Adam Jorgenson pitched two scoreless innings to earn his fifth save of the year.

Fullerton got to Davis starter Brad McAtee (1-3) early, scoring three times in the top of the second inning. The Titans used two doubles (John Curtis and Evan McArthur) and a Kris Davis single to get a pair of runs, but it was a full-count, bases-loaded squeeze bunt by Joe Scott that capped the Titan offensive effort, giving the Titans a 3-0 lead.

The two team traded runs in the third and fourth innings. The second of three Aggies singles, a knock to left field by Matt Dempsey cut the Titans lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second. But Fullerton got the run back courtesy of a fielding error by Aggie shortstop Justin Schafer in the fourth. McArthur picked up his second hit and RBI of the day to drive home Nick Mahin aboard on the error.

UC Davis produced a two-run, two out rally get within one in the fourth. Kaplan struck out the first two hitters in the frame, but a walk to the third hitter he faced and consecutive hits by Kevin James (double) and Schafer (single) got the Aggies as close as they would get at 4-3.

The score would remain 4-3 until the ninth when the Titans' Josh Fellhauer sacrificed a run home with a fly ball to left and Khris Davis singled to drive in the final run off reliever Eddie Gamboa.

Game two of the double header will feature Sean Urena (3-3) facing Aggie Jeff Reekers (4-2). No new inning will be played in game two after 5 p.m. due to Cal State Fullerton travel arrangements.
