Baseball (29-16, 13-5)...

The Titans will try to accomplish this week what they did last week -- beat a strong West Coast Conference opponent and then win a Big West Conference series. In the process, they also would like to put an end to a Saturday hex that has seen them compile a 3-8 record on that day of the week compared to 26-8 on other days.

Fullerton also will be seeking to avenge its worst loss of the season, a 13-2 drubbing in Malibu on March 18, when it hosts Pepperdine on Tuesday night. After a tenth annual free clinic and pizza party at Goodwin Field for developmentally disabled children on Wednesday (6 to 8 p.m.), the Titans host Cal Poly SLO for the final home Big West series of the season.

Fullerton routed San Diego, the WCC leader, by a 12-3 margin this past Tuesday and then won a series at UC Santa Barbara with wins of 7-4 and 11-1 wrapped around a 10-2 defeat.

The Titans' bullpen was the catalyst against USD, blanking the Toreros over the last 7 innings with Ryan Ackland getting the win by posting three zeroes on the scoreboard. Fullerton twice came from behind, taking the lead for good with a 5-run second inning. A two-run home run by Erik Komatsu and a three-run pinch-hit job by Khris Davis completed the scoring.

The Titans and Jeff Kaplan were down to the Gauchos, 4-1, after seven innings on Friday but finished strong. Joel Weeks and Josh Fellhauer each drove home a pair in a 5-run eighth inning and Jared Clark added a home run in the ninth. Kaplan retired the final six Gauchos for a complete game to improve to 8-1.

Daniel Renken (4-4) was the victim of four unearned runs in one of his poorer efforts in defeat on Saturday, but Cory Arbiso (9-2) kept rolling on Sundays. He won his ninth consecutive start, allowing only 3 hits and 1 run before turning the mound over to Adam Jorgenson for a scoreless ninth inning. Gary Brown hit a two-run homer to put Fullerton ahead for good and Dustin Garneau and Brian Wilson added roundtrippers.

The following week the Titans host San Diego State in a 3-game non-conference series and then host UCLA on May 20 to wrap up the home schedule..

Softball (26-24-1, 10-8)...

To say the Titans have a critical regular-season ending series this weekend at Anderson Family Field is an understatement.

After a 2-1 series win last weekend over first-place Long Beach State, the Titans host UC Santa Barbara and have a chance to sew up second place with a longshot opportunity to earn an automatic NCAA berth. They also could play themselves out of the NCAA picture.

The possible scenarios:

• tie for first place and have the tie-breaker over Long Beach State if the Titans sweep UCSB and the 49ers get swept at home by Pacific.

• move ahead of the Gauchos into second place with a sweep while Long Beach wins at least once to clinch or tie for second and have the tie-breaker advantage over UCSB with a 2-1 series win.

• on the other hand, the Titans could stumble all the way to fifth place with merely one loss and three would leave them with a losing overall record and knock them out of NCAA at-large consideration.

Sunday is selection day and Regionals begin on May 16.

Jessica Doucette's clutch 3-hit shutout on Sunday for a 3-0 win over the 49ers positively positioned the Titans, who scored three times in the second inning thanks to two-out singles by Courtney Martinez, Crystal Vieyra and Katie Gollhardt.

On Saturday, the teams split a pair of dramatic games. In the opener, Long Beach State scored twice after two were out in the top half of the eighth inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Titans got a run and had the tying run at second base but couldn't get it home for a 3-2 loss.

In the nightcap, the Titans were one out away from a 1-0 defeat. But a pair of two-out walks loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and Vieyra was hit by a pitch to force home the tying run. Freshman Torrie Anderson then laced a single up the middle for a 2-1 win. Freshman Christine Hiner went the distance, allowing 5 hits, for the victory.

Doucette earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time. Vieyra was hit by a pitch three times over the weekend to run her career total to 55 bruises, second in NCAA history. The record is 62 by Cheryl Wyrick of Liberty University.

Track & Field...

Two more NCAA regional qualifying marks by the men and a couple of major personal best improvements by women's distance runners highlighted Cal State Fullerton's efforts over the weekend at the Steve Scott Invitational Track and Field Meet at UC Irvine.

Michael Stokes had the most dramatic accomplishment, beating his personal best by about 18 inches and his 2008 best by almost two feet with an NCAA regional qualifing mark of 24 feet, 11 inches in the long jump. And Roberto Archibold qualified for the men's 400 hurdles with a time of 52.41, his best career mark. Steve Truong also ran his best 400H race at 55.33.

Both David Soto and Eddie Perez posted career bests in the steeplechase with times of 9:30.15 and 9:30.80, respectively. Garrett Myers had a PR in the 400 meter hurdles at 48.24.

On the women's side, Ciara Short continued her strong season with a PR of 24.66 in the 200 meters and Andrea Aguilar and Yomaira Hernandez both ran well in the 5K. Aguilar clocked in at 17:56.79 to beat her previous best by about 10 seconds while Hernandez improved by 24 seconds with a time of 18:04.79.

Lauren Williams passed on the 100 hurdles and her concentration on the 400 hurdles paid off with a personal best by more than a second of 62.24 in that event. Danielle Alvarado posted a Big West qualifying time of 65.07 in the same event.

This week some of the Titans will compete at the Occidental Invitational on Saturday. Cal State Northridge hosts the Big West decathlon and heptathlon championships. The Titans do not have a decathlete but Janey Davis and Heather Leidle are heptathlon entries.

Personnel...
Assistant men's basketball coach Marlon Morton has resigned his post creating a second vacancy in the Titans' coaching staff. Jason Levy left last month to become the No. 1 assistant to new Head Coach Bill Bayno at Loyola Marymount.

University Village Athlete of the Week...

Junior Cory Arbiso (La Mirada / Buena Park HS) won his ninth consecutive game on Sunday with an 8-inning, 3-hit, 1-run effort at UC Santa Barbara to give the Titans an 11-1 win and a 2-1 series victory over the second-place Gauchos.
